DOUG COGILL MATCH PLAY
The Doug Cogill Match Play championship is a prestigious event. Just the top eight players from the Club Championships qualify to play off for this trophy. Young Guns Jake Crowther and Gus Peni were finally able to get their finals match played on Sunday 29/07, after two weeks of miserable wet weather prevented the final being played earlier on the scheduled date.
Jake played through the top half of the draw, and that was no cake-walk. This part of the draw included the current Club Champion and two previous Club Champions! In the Semi final, Jake defeated Nick Drinkwater (current Champ) 3/2.
However, 16 year old 2-marker Jake was hot to trot on Sunday, with his sizzling scoring on three of our hardest holes enough to demoralise the best of us, including Gus. Jake's had set up for three birdies on holes three, four and five - he didn't need to putt out, and this exquisite shot making was certainly the scene set for the rest of the match. Gus was unable to recover from this onslaught, Jake adding this trophy to his cabinet with a convincing 6/4 win.
Jake is certainly in good form lately - he stumbled on just one hole during our Club Championship to just miss out here, but did take out the Horton Park Junior Open a couple of weeks later, which included a hole in one! And now he is preparing to defend his NGC Foursomes Championship title in a couple of week's time.
