September Greens Report
Spring weather has hit upon us once again. A couple of 27 - 28 degree days and the course is in fine form. Tees are growing over the bare patches and the sun is hitting the winter shaded areas of greens and fairways.
The Town of Nambour weekend went fairly well and everyone enjoyed themselves. Thanks to Ken and Joe for the great couple of days ... sorry about my golf boys!
The 6th green has once again been taken out of play for its 2nd make-over. We will be using our nursery turf for he resurfacing. It's healthy and guaranteed disease free. The temporary 5th green is a lot bigger this time and even though it's predominently broad leaf, with the use of a 'growth regulator' and lots of top dressing ... we should be able to create a decent putting surface during its time.
Some work will be starting on 'suspect' areas of the course during the summer growing season. Work will be done on places for drainage, creating mounds and swails on some fairways and green surrounds. This will assist in diverting surface water away from our greens and tees, which suffer wash-outs during heavy rains. Also tees on the back of #6 and #14 will be resurfaced with couch grass now that more sun is on these once shaded areas.
With grass growing and work to be done on these areas, we have employed a sixth worker, Robert Forestal. He has golf course experience on courses such as River Side Oaks and Wilacia Golf Club in Sydney and is a welcome addition to our team. I would also like to thank Mithch White who has recently completed some work experience, which I'm sure you all agree is great for the young people of the community and NGC.
Last but not least, a BIG thankyou to Ken Best for his expertise on replacing the head on the blue truck, which is now runing like a dream!
Regards, Mick
Superintendent.

We are now more enlightened about the damage caused to a number of our greens recently. Soil samples from a control green and the damaged green were sent away to Superior Turf Solutions for a nutrient analysis. The technical and highly professional final report has just been received, pointing to the most probable cause of sterilized soil in the greens being from granulated pool chlorine. How does pool chlorine get into a golf course green? Investigations have revealed that it was purposely spread by scraping with feet. The photos seem to bear that out. One green affected could have been an accident, but a number of them points to sabotage or vandalism. If this is the case, what sort of person or persons would deliberately try to spoil an activity enjoyed by so many? I have some descriptions - bet yours are better!
Damage first occurred on the 8th green surounds and on hole #16. A second event (pictured) happened before the field started on Friday 27 June on holes #1 and #11. So those responsible played early when the dew was still on the grass, and before the competition started.
